Cy Bernheim’s practice is inspired by nature and the urban landscape. Their intention is to create works celebrating the complexity and mystery of their environment, whether naturally occurring or man-made.
Bernheim has a BSc (Hons) Molecular Biology from University College London and a BA (Hons) Textile Design from Chelsea College of Art and Design. Their background in science and textile design has influenced their work in terms of subject matter, focus on detail, colour, texture and materials.
Using drawing and photography to capture the details of their surroundings, Bernheim uses printmaking, in particular intaglio processes to translate these findings into works on paper. Digital tools are used to create the images that are subsequently exposed on to zinc plates coated with a photosensitive emulsion by hand. The plates are then deeply etched in a copper sulphate solution over several hours. The works presented are part of an ongoing series.
They have exhibited more widely since 2010 in a number of independent shows and larger mixed exhibitions. Highlights include the London Elephant Parade, the International Original Print Exhibition and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair.
Their work is held in private and public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Printmakers’ Council’s Archive.
